Scholarships & Academies
To compliment the extensive benefits provided by the UTS Elite Athlete Program, UTS Sport have partnered with several of our high performance sporting clubs to produce additional scholarships and academy programs. These programs aim to further reward UTS students representing UTS sporting clubs, with a range of sport specific benefits, some of which are discussed below. Based in Chatswood, the UTS Northern Suburbs Athletics Club have produced a large number of athletes who have competed at major national and international championships. With the opportunity to represent UTS at a domestic, intervarsity and national level, the UTS Northern Suburbs Rewards and Recognition Scheme rewards athletes on a race-to-race basis and leverages off the existing EAP to create one of the most supportive overall track and field scholarship programs in Australia.
Fielding both men’s and women’s teams at their Eastern Suburbs facilities, the UTS Bats and Shamrocks Australian Football Club/s pride themselves on their club strategy of “culture before football”. Striving towards a professional, friendly and focussed environment, athletes of all abilities are welcome. Outstanding sportsmanship and representation are further rewarded by the club’s Talented Player Scholarship Program, providing UTS students with further financial support on top of the existing EAP benefits.
The UTS Northside Futsal Club compete in the NSW Premier League and are represented by UTS students at the National University Championships, where they currently hold the championship title for both the men’s and women’s divisions. The club provide further financial scholarships to UTS students who represent the club during their years as UTS students.
Producing over 30 Olympians, the UTS Rowing club boats a world class rowing program based out of UTS’ Haberfield facilities. Three full time rowing coaches oversee athletic development at the club, including scholarship holders who receive additional support at a sporting and academic level.
Providing pathways from junior rugby to Shute Shield representation, as well as women’s training programs, Gordon Rugby Union Club have partnered with UTS to assist athletes with their tertiary studies. The club possess one of Australia’s most extensive Rugby Scholarship Programs, primarily in the way of financial support and assisted academic aspirations.
Recently named as UTS’ Club of the Year for 2017, Surry Hills’ UTS Tennis Club are regular medal contenders at National Intervarsity events, providing coaches for beginners and elite athletes. The club are producing one of Australia’s most progressive intervarsity sporting scholarships whilst they support their athletes’ participation in endorsed events.
Proudly the most successful Water Polo club in Australia, the UTS Balmain Water Polo Club have produced multiple Olympian’s throughout their years as Australia’s oldest elite Water Polo club. In conjunction with the UTS Elite Athlete Program, the club supports UTS students with significant Water Polo representation throughout their time as a student at UTS.
UTS Sparks Netball Academy
Unlike any other netball program in NSW, the UTS Sparks Netball Academy is an elite training academy for 15-19 year old females, identified as a credible pathway for Premier League representation. Based at UTS’ Ross Milbourne Sports Hall, athletes are provided with some of the state’s best coaching, in addition to athlete education and information on tertiary study at UTS. The UTS Sparks has proudly played an integral part in the development of Suncorp Super Netball players such as Kim Commane, Kaitlyn Bryce and 2016 & 2017 UTS Sports Woman of the Year Claire O’Brien.
UTS Gordon Women’s Rugby Sevens Academy
Leveraging off Australia’s success at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, Gordon Rugby and UTS have combined to create a women’s rugby sevens academy. This free weekly program, based at Gordon’s Chatswood facilities alongside the men’s training sessions, invites females of all skill levels and sporting backgrounds to register and learn new skills in an exciting form of rugby union.
UTS Softball Academy
The inaugural UTS Softball Academy is due to commence in 2018 under the guidance of UTS EAP Alumni. Free weekly sessions aim to provide a low commitment way for UTS students to participate in weekly sport, further their skills created in high school, and meet other UTS students. The eight week Academy serves as a pre-requisite for National University Championship team selection, of which Team UTS has a strong history in, recently claiming a silver medal in 2016.
Water Polo NSW
UTS Sport and Water Polo NSW established a significant partnership in 2015 to provide adequate sporting and academic pathways for talented junior water polo players. The Water Polo NSW Academy is an invitational program that engages promising u14, u16 and u18 players, with the tri-fold focus of skill development, gym development, and athlete education. This official NSW pathway is a Water Polo Australia endorsed program and is further partnered with the NSW Institute of Sport.
NSW Men’s Netball
UTS Sport has partnered with NSW Men’s Netball to help support the development and growth of men’s netball in NSW. UTS is the only university in NSW with a women’s Premier League franchise and has now committed to helping the next generation of male netballers make their way through the NSW and national pathways.
