Anime@UTS' DIY Windchimes

How to make a teru teru bozu (windchime)

As part of the DIY collaboration bought to you by ActivateUTS, teru teru bozu was chosen due to its active depiction in anime and as part of Japanese culture.  The appearance of teru teru bozu in anime is a reflection of the Japanese culture and custom, where it is often made by kids in hopes of preventing rain and provide good weather the following day. It is super simple to make and the materials required are all common household goods that almost anybody can find around the home.

As lockdown restrictions are easing, meaning many people are making plans with friends, create your very own teru teru bozu and encourage good weather and prevent rain for your meetups!

Equipment and materials

  • Tissue paper
  • String

  2. Take two tissue paper and layer them together and put the tissue ball in the centre.
  3. Wrap the tissue ball so that it turns into the head of the teru teru bozu.
  4. Tie up the head with a string or rubber band .
  5. Use a marker and draw a cute face on the head of the teru teru bozu.
  6. Give the teru teru boze a ribbon using the string and hang it by the window.

Quick trivia!

A famous movie which released in japan last year, known as "Weathering With You", developed by the same creator as the famous "Your name" made the teru teru boza become more relevant and popular! Check it out here:
